A Gem of a test from Diamond Organics

Ok, I've recovered from the grocery store meltdown. Sort of. I can still see that sweet girl's face, can still feel my insides roil as the memory of that woman and her Klondikes flits in and out of my head, but I have my girls and they need my attention and participation.

Friday we received a large package from Diamond Organics courtesy of Grandma. We feasted on organic strawberries that couldn't have tasted fresher if they'd come from our own garden on a lazy summer night. We paired them with organic sharp cheddar cheese and whole grain crackers. We peeled pears and giggled at mini-bananas. The girls watched as I peeled a kiwi and cut it in slices. Briar wanted nothing to do with it, but Avery was game.

After the great kiwi test, the girls looked at me expectantly, "What is that one, mommy?"

"I have no idea," I answered honestly.

"Are we going to eat it?" Briar asked.

"Do you want to?" I replied.

After eyeing it suspiciously she gave ma a rather emphatic, "No!" as her answer.

Avery and I looked at it, she seemed content to continue gnoshing on the kiwi. "Wanna know something?" I asked Briar.

"What, mama?" she asked, her eyes dancing.

"I don't want to either."

"Hey, what're you guys doing?" Sean asked as he walked into the kitchen all scruffy and rumpled from a nap.

"Here. Try this," and I thrust the artichokey-rotten-mangoey looking "fruit"* at him.

*It was a cherimoya. Generally I find Mark Twain to have been an incredibly witty individual with impeccable taste. If wikipedia is correct in saying that he called the cherimoya "the most delicious fruit known to men," then I have to wonder about him. I am all for healthy food and trying new things, but the cherimoya and its "custard-like consistency" is officially going to the place where I hold mangos, papayas, blueberries, bread pudding and assorted other food items that seem to come in a pre-masticated consistency.

Nice! A fruit adventure. We just got a new grocery store that carries a very wide variety of exotic fruits. I have looked over them a few times, but I haven't picked any of the ones I can't name up yet. But I think you have inspired me to have a fruit adventure for the girls tonight.

Could not view the video. Darn.

The fruit taste-test sounds like fun. I have never heard of that last thing before...and I don't think I've seen one either.

But I guess I don't need to worry that I'm missing out.

We got one of those fruits in our organic basket a few weeks ago...I had not clue what to do with and I completely agree - it was odd. I ate some of it, we all tasted it, but we are not fans either.

On the other hand, if you ever get your hand on some kiwai - you will be psyched. (I can't find any websites about them... they are like mini kiwis that you just pop in your mouth.)

He was a good sport, though, to be the cherimoya guinea pig.

Oh no, don't hate on the blueberries, they've got a chemical in them which kills the bacteria that causes cavities. Give the girls a handful every day as a snack! Keep the "sugar bugs" away! The snack you described....EXACTLY the same stuff my kids eat. With a little avocado slice or two thrown in for good measure. Here's to healthy eating!

We have a service in Colorado called Door to Door Organics that my husband and I have used for a few years and absolutely Love. It is fun because it makes us try things we would not ordinarily pick up. It is fun to try new and different things, and great to find other like-minded-good-food-people in the blogosphere. I am not savvy enough to make links, but if you go to my blog, 2 of the blogs listed in my favorites discuss food a lot. Jen & Sean (a good friend and former organic farm employee) and Stapleton Halth and Wellness (my husband) if you are interested...
Have a great day!

Whoa! You have another Colorado reader! I thought I was the only one. *sniff*

Anyway, yay for you guys for trying something new!

When I first saw that on the video, I thought it looked like an artichoke. I could not for the life of me figure out where in the world you might have grown up that you didn't know what an artichoke was.

Damn pregnancy brain. ;) (mine, not yours!)

Brave man for trying that one! I like new things and don't know if I would have gone there though.

Bump is looking good ;)

That's great that your girls will try new things. My six year old son has to be coaxed to try even the most ordinary things, but he is getting a little better.

I'm not a fan of bread pudding because of the consistency either, but if you ever get a chance try the bread pudding at Nordstrom's cafe. It is to DIE for.
