The Cupboard Was Bare

Every so often we run completely out of food and as I glare in the cupboards willing a box of Annie's macaroni and cheese to appear I see it.

Sauerkraut.

Canned.

I don't know where the hell this thing comes from. I could swear that I've thrown it away seven times, and yet every time the cupboards are bare, Ole sauerkraut comes a calling.

Other irrefutable truths that remain constant during times of famine at Chez Magee -

There will be asparagus with rotten tips in the crisper.

There will be no less than two entire jars of pickles in the fridge.

There will be partially opened string cheese with hardened edges curling in the lunch meat drawer.

There will be vegan frozen entrees in the freezer.

I will be ravenous.

I'm off to the store, anyone need canned sauerkraut?

Sounds familiar. For me, it's always sour cream. 2 or 3 half empty containers in the fridge. Always.

Too bad you didn't have any Spam to go with the sauerkrat! Mmmm, lunch...

That was the Hanna slipdress, one of the few Hanna items bought brand new for her. I have gone to the Hanna outlet store and the deals are fabulous. I love the slipdress, the eyelet detail, the comfy-ness of it. I want one!

This keeps happening to my mother, except it's a block of wood, not sauerkraut. We've traced the phenomenon to one renegade squirrel, no joke. Every time she throws/hides/buries this same block of wood, he digs it up and puts it right back on her front porch steps.

So maybe you have squirrels.

Yeah, what is with the Cheesestrings?

We have had the same can of mixed beans for years. I think my husband bought it thinking I would make a bean salad, despite the fact that I don't really enjoy bean salad and don't tend to prepare foods that I don't enjoy. If there is ever a catatrophic event, and we survive, I guess we will spend our last days eating bean salad.

I have a giant can of pumpkin that won't go away. Oh and 2 cans of Campbell's Potato soup that is never Tomato when I need it to be.

For a while, every time I was at the store, I would buy taco cheese and tortillas. We had SO MUCH of both that it finally got through to me that I didn't need to buy those whenever I was at the store. And now, we're almost out.

A box of Chex cereal. And not the good kind of Chex. The kind that is ONLY good if you spend $200 on fixings to make Chex Mix.

Of course, now the one box is too stale. So you have to buy more. Which makes IT the box in the cabinet. That gets stale.

It's a vicious cycle.

What is it about pickles? Not only do I have two opened jars in the fridge, but I have another jar in the pantry.

for us it's half opened packages of pasta. you know, the kind that spill all over the cupboard because you are too lazy to close the bag properly?

Get some veggies brats and some mustard and you've got a better meal than ole Mac and Cheese...

The only thing I ever have in my pantry is kidney beans and water chestnuts.

Yummy.

Good thing the kids cook around here...
